Nearly a week following Hurricane Melissa pummelled into the island's west coast with record force, people in damaged neighborhoods by the shoreline are still desperately waiting for help.

Numerous thoroughfares are obstructed by wreckage and people are isolated with limited provisions, no power or running water, and unknown restoration dates.

Increasing Casualties

Officials reported on recently that a minimum of 28 persons in Jamaica have perished after the storm struck as a devastating Category 5 hurricane with nearly 300 km/h wind speeds.

This represents almost a 50% increase in the death toll overnight, and totals might grow as authorities make progress into new parts of the island in the near future.

"Everyone here is ruined," he said. Maritime facilities were wrecked and is now "leveled"

Crop Damage

This reflects identical sentiment struck by a local farmer, sitting in the bed of his truck selling pears, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes – the last of his produce that was saved from destruction.

Of his farm, he said: "Total devastation occurred. Total ruin resulted" But he promptly continued: "We need to appreciate being alive"

International Assistance

Concurrently, external support is commencing delivery into Jamaica.

American authorities stated that its emergency relief unit had arrived. Nations such as Britain have also pledged millions in aid relief funds and emergency supplies.
