Walmart Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

In a significant move, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can buy during a single visit. This policy was activated as of early November, according to an internal announcement shared with employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video received significant criticism for permitting the large-scale transaction to proceed.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. However, the language has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Additionally, since the limit is based on each visit, theoretically a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to gather significant stocks throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

For the average collector, such efforts might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.

Certain buyers seek to sell unopened products for a profit, while others search for rare cards that can fetch extraordinary prices. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set is currently selling for over $800 on various platforms.

Upcoming Releases

This policy change coincides with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, scheduled for November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the ongoing demand and potential reseller attention.

With any luck, the retail limits will help reduce bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and casual players as well.
