Unbowed Wilfried Nancy does not fear the sack yet supporters unleash wrath after defeat.
The under-pressure manager declared he was not afraid of the sack, claiming, “The team is extremely close to things turning around,” even after sliding worryingly close to being fired with a comprehensive loss to the Ibrox side.
A Second-Half Meltdown Sees Derby Loss
Celtic were in front Rangers at half-time but a disastrous second period allowed Rangers to draw level on points with the current league title holders. Nancy, who was appointed in December, has now been in charge for six setbacks in his first eight games.
“We are together with the board,” insisted Nancy.
Pressed on his own future, the 48-year-old responded: “That’s not my focus. My focus is on finding ways to help my team to be good on details.
Protest Outside Parkhead
The fans made their feelings clear – aimed at the board and manager – by gathering at Parkhead. The board are reportedly likely to return to Martin O’Neill, who enjoyed a successful temporary stint last year, if the Frenchman were sacked.
“Wins and losses [that leads to pressure]. And that’s the situation for the moment. Yet by saying this is the reality, that is not a sign that I am pessimistic. Not at all. The message is we are really close, really, really close to reverse our form.”
Focus on the Details
The coach continues to cling to the fact his team play well for one half at a time. In fact, but for wastefulness in front of goal they might have been more than 1-0 up. “I saw enough other than the fact that we didn't take a second goal,” he said. “I know that we lost, but it's important to stay balanced.
“The level we had at stages was of top quality. This is the reality. I wouldn't speak so positively if it was different. Therefore, when it comes to wins, I noted it's a repeating pattern. Which is why I said that we are nearly there to things turning around. Currently: small things.”
“There were a lot of encouraging signs that we did, once more. However is sustaining it. My narrative would be different if I didn't believe it. This is why I am a big believer we’re going to be able to turn things around.”
Röhl’s Cautious Stance
The victorious boss played down talk of a serious challenge despite what felt like a landmark win. “Step by step, then we can develop momentum,” he said. “The faith in the team is excellent.”
