The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
