The people of Israel mark second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks proceed
Citizens have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the discussions indicated that an evening round of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have still not deliver any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Key Matters in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the area
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place seems like home anymore and until all the hostages come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see all home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about 70% of the population desire the conflict to finish in as payment for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the gathering, grieving people came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, area and zone districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my little child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the bodies of several people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said two more victims had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, health workers stated.
