The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An recent acronym came to light several months into the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities has denied these accusations, just as it refutes everything it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it once represented. A competition that once promoted peace has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
