The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
