That Gruesome Animated Film Conclusion That Stays With Fans
Out of every mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the terror-laced conclusion of the viscerally violent as well as overwhelingly transgressive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish filmmaker created a dark, bleak , frequently brutal world with some tiny , forlorn hints of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it came from an impulse to advance animation further, the director explained that it was actually an attempt to express a universal, multicultural theme regarding “the common origin of each battle.”
That message is expressed through a band of brightly hued teddy bears , openly based on a famous line of lovable figures.
Maturing in a culture centered on militarism and the war machine, a lot of these creatures are fixated on slaughtering unicorns, thanks to a sacred text which states them they previously were rulers of the woodland, until the unicorns forced them out.
Others did not entirely accepted the indoctrination, and prefer to experiment with drugs or fornicate in the woods.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these vivid animals have visible genitals , definite urges.
For a particular notably brutal, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns turns into a path to control — and particularly to dominance over his softer, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
The character acts as a tormentor and a seeming antisocial figure , and as fear dominates his squad and takes his comrades individually, he grabs more and more power personally, in increasingly gory, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are suffering their own horror, in the form of a growing, harmful creature in their forest.
“At the beginning, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director said. “But then it turns into a more dramatic and sad movie. And by the end, it transforms into a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the most quirky movies from an iconic animator, that uncover a mischievous joy in allowing animated figures swear, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Then it turns into something more like a more grim film from the same artist, with increasingly graphic violence and a tangible link to the actual tragedy of conflict.
In the finale, it becomes an outright Grand Guignol carnage.
The fear that turns the film an ideal spooky-season movie begins a lot earlier than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted fans of gore, for fans of graphic films who desire to view a movie they haven’t ever watched previously, and who can handle a story that offers no restraint.
View it in a dark room without any distractions, and the conclusion will dig under your skin and linger.
