Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Community members told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, causing relatives in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.
Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in the last several months, with learning centers suffering the most of the violence.
