He battled justice and the law won.

A couple of months after getting a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “annihilate” the nation's political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now looks destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The convicted plotter – who has been subject to home confinement in his mansion while a series of legal procedures and appeals play out – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the coming days, during mounting rumors that he will be sent to a well-known top-security prison.

Historical Statements on Prisoners

Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the right-wing ex- military man exhibited minimal compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“Why should we offer these scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to finish behind bars, all you have to do is not sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Jail Location Speculation

However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, four of whom this week toured the complex in an obvious attempt to prevent the judiciary from banishing him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, said he anticipated the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the last election race – implied it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He will not be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells containing four dozen detainees: “That is virtually one square meter per prisoner.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they complain, naturally, of the awful food,” continued the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

Lucas is not the lone figure voicing opinions before the former president’s expected detention.

Authoring in a major daily, one more backer, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the biggest unfairness in its history”.

“It is an injustice that eats away the souls of countless people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided Public Response

This could be true given the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. But his anticipated incarceration has also gladdened the hearts of numerous other people who think he ought to be jailed for planning to block the incoming president from taking power – and even plotting to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the current administration's allied group, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive proper handling – but proper treatment in prison. He cannot continue being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years applauding the severe conditions of inmates, had abruptly become aware to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly argued that human rights were not for criminals – decided to inspect a penitentiary to learn what circumstances are really like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning conduct”.

Likely Incarceration Conditions

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely assigned facility looks to be a nearby jail for law enforcement and other “special” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are much more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while living in the spectacular presidential palace, around a short distance away.

Based on information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – roughly the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and contains a 130 square foot WC with a water facility and a 130 square foot terrace. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a television and additionally a small fridge in his cell as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report stated.

Ideological Reactions

The lawmaker criticized the speculated proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his future in the {
