A study titled “Until Harm Stops” filed information requests to children’s services departments across the UK nations.

Statistics from 135 government bodies indicated that out of 2,335 young people classified as having been trafficked or believed to be trafficking victims, eight hundred sixty-four (thirty-seven percent) were listed as disappeared.

In total 141 government bodies responded to queries about solo young asylum applicants in their care, who numbered 11,999 minors. Of these, one thousand five hundred one (13%) were reported missing.

Serious Threat for Endangered Young People

The analysis, issued by charities, cautions that these groups are at “extremely elevated danger” of disappearing from care.

Some trafficked children in the UK are UK nationals while the remainder are from other countries.

They may have faced either sexual exploitation or illegal activities misuse, for example by drug trafficking networks.

Systemic Shortcomings in Care

Government bodies have a mandatory responsibility to safeguard and support trafficked and unaccompanied children under youth safety systems. Nonetheless, there is no publicly available central government data on the issue.

The new report cautions that considerations such as unstable residency permits can amplify young people’s susceptibility to further harm, placing them at significant risk of re-trafficking and further abuse.

Demands for Intervention

The analysis indicates there is a “ongoing and major shortcoming” in care and calls on municipal councils and law enforcement to guarantee compliance with effective methods.

The analysts also urge the National Education Department to guarantee all trafficked and unaccompanied children can obtain appropriate accommodation that shields them from being re-victimized.

Lodging Issues

Beginning from September 2021, government bodies have been obligated to ensure that all wards of the state under 16 are assigned to facilities that offer supervision.

However, youths in their late teens can still be placed in so-called “supervised lodging” that does not give daily supervision.

In exceptional circumstances, these older children can be located in hostels, trailers, camping structures, watercraft, or communal living with non-family members.

Authorities Response

An official representative stated: “The current administration took over a children’s social care system not meeting the requirements of the country’s most vulnerable children.

“Our major minor protection and schooling act is the most substantial restructuring of children’s social care in a long time, fulfilling our objective to eliminate the relationship between young people’s origins and their later achievements.”

The spokesperson continued that the actions include improving the access of protective housing, enhanced data exchange, mandating the formation of interdisciplinary youth safety groups in every area, and introducing a new obligation on associates to automatically include education and childcare settings in their safeguarding arrangements to help avoid children slipping through the net.
