Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
