British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
