Astronaut Shares Depression After Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
