Aggressive, Bullying, Expansionist: the Return of the Ugly American

For a long time, successive administrations has attempted to rid the United States of its reputation as a bullying, hegemonic nation. However with his bombastic, frequently harsh actions toward other countries, the U.S. leader has quickly resurrected that notion. Under Trump, the negative U.S. stereotype is back.

Aggressive Use of Authority

He achieved this by employing U.S. authority in forceful and overbearing ways – by condemning other countries’ policies and then promising to penalize them if they don’t bow to his expectations. Trump is doing exactly what global regulations says national leaders shouldn’t be doing. Time and again intervened into foreign nations' internal matters, intimidating their officials, criticizing their strategies and disrespecting their independence. Regularly, he regards foreign nations as subordinates of the US (and of his personal pride).

Background of the "Negative Stereotype"

The term “the Ugly American” was brought to prominence by a book from 1958 with that title; it portrayed the insensitivity and incompetence of U.S. representatives who frequently couldn't communicate in the tongue where they were assigned and rarely engaged with the people there. Over the years, that term was frequently employed to portray insensitive and overbearing U.S. visitors and tactless and arrogant U.S. strategies toward international partners.

International Involvement

Trump has acted like an Ugly American in many ways. He has interfered in the domestic matters of Brazil by virtually commanding it to drop the legal case of its right-leaning previous head of state (and close associate) the former leader for scheming to orchestrate a takeover to return to power. Once Brazil maintained the case – the ex-president was convicted and handed a punishment to over two decades in prison – Trump imposed a significant import tax on products from Brazil.

In recent times, he has embodied the Ugly, even Irrational, American toward the northern neighbor when he expressed fury after watching a commercial, funded by the territory of the Canadian province, that featured parts of a former president Reagan oration against tariffs. As a response, Trump imposed an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods. That move added to the frustration of Canadian citizens who were already angered about his ridiculous proposal to transform Canada into the 51st state.

Furthermore, he has tried to pressure the Latin American country. He declared the US would end support to the state after its leader, the Colombian president, objected that the US had struck a Colombian fishing boat and caused a fisherman's death as part of his initiative of targeting vessels allegedly transporting drugs. Employing unpleasant, undiplomatic language, he described the head of state an “illegal drug leader”.

Military Warnings

Concurrently emerge Trump’s intermittent threats to launch military strikes against the South American country. They’re a reminder of Washington’s blatantly expansionist involvements in, among other places, the Southeast Asian nation, Granada and Iran, with the government overthrow in 1953 deposing a leftist government leader. The head of state, the Venezuelan leader, is unethical, repressive and dictatorial, and rigged a vote, but armed involvement would be a throwback to the worst days of unpleasant American policies.

European Bloc Issues

He has additionally involved himself in the European Union’s affairs. In an era when online platforms is saturated with countless misinformation that it creates difficulties for representative systems to operate, even survive, the EU has reasonably mandated social media platforms to remove lies and other false narratives. But Trump has lambasted the EU online rules, stating that it unfairly targets US tech companies. The White House has upset the European bloc by warning to impose new tariffs and constrain the entry permits of selected EU personnel.

The unpleasant U.S. policies have done serious injury to Washington’s image internationally

Diplomatic Involvement

Trump has improperly involved himself in Argentina’s politics by saying he would provide a $40bn bailout, but might pull the financial support if the faction of the nation's head of state, the national leader, lost parliamentary votes. “In case of his loss, we are will not be generous with Argentina,” he declared. The faction won, amid interfering the U.S. leader claiming partial responsibility, declaring: “He obtained significant assistance from our administration.”

The second-in-command, the vice-president, interfered in Germany's governmental matters by condemning conventional factions for establishing a barrier against letting far-right parties such as the Alternative for Germany into a governing coalition. Through an oration last month to the Israeli parliament, he involved himself in Israeli political affairs in an extraordinary way, calling on the nation's leader to forgive the government leader, the Israeli leader, on the corruption charges against him.

United Nations Address

In his sixty-minute tirade to the international organization meeting in last fall, he sought to portray himself as Global Leader. He instructed the 193 countries in the U.N. to abandon their environmental regulations, stating concerns about global warming are {“the greatest con job
